Department of Public Works (DPW) handles the construction and safety side of the business. For example, if you are interested in building a commercial building, you must submit your plans to DPW for a building permit. If you are renting a commercial space, your are required to submit a safety inspection request and once inspected and approved, you will receive a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) which needs to be renewed each year. This CO is required as one of the requirements when applying for the sanitation permit at the Bureau of Environmental Health (BEH).
